There are five volumes about the court life of the last empress dowager of China, Cixi, the culture of Beijing and the life of ordinary people, which were summarised by my grandfather in beautiful illustrations and texts. Liang Yi, Professor of History at Beijing Union University, published a bound volume of the manuscript in China in April 2009. Interestingly, the content also has something to do with her family history, as her maternal grandfather is said to have been a contemporary brother of the last emperor of China (Fig. 207).

In this book, edited and annotated by Prof Liang Yi, John Rabe's life in Beijing and other Chinese cities before his arrival in Nanjing is documented in detail.
